This is my pre-instruction vessel. It is the first project we did with clay. This vessel is a decent sized clay bowl, it is kind of big, but not huge. I used the geometric element of design for this bowl as it is an open sphere in a way with a circle top. This clay sculpture serves as a functional vessel as it is something someone could eat out of or put liquids in. I had originally tried to make a cup but it failed due to me not working with clay in a very long time. However, I tried again and created this bowl by making a base at the bottom and working my way up from there, creating walls around the base in a spherical manner. I found creating a base successful as a first step as it creates a foundation for the rest of the sculpture. I used Bernard Leach as inspiration for this vessel, I was inspired by his "thrown bowl" I find his ceramic sculptures to be very unique and interesting. What was not successful about this was the top of it, it is not even. I used a few different tools to try to smooth the top and the outside out but it created cracks and made the bowl not smooth. Overall, I do like this project because it came out exactly how I imagined it in my head. It is not as smooth or as even as I would have liked but I still tried my best! I don't think it is that bad for a first project.
